THE FUTURE OF TEXTILE MANUFACTURING
Knowledge Gap
We have found that there are questions raised and future areas of research we could explore following our tax proposal.
It's difficult to try to avoid fast fashion all together when it's so cheap. In the world we live in currently, there are few sustainable clothing options that are affordable. It can be hard to create fashion that will be affordable to the low income population, and this is not something we took into account.
Another key aspect that we still creates a knowledge gap is wether or not the sustainable clothes will be fashionable. One of the main reason people like fast fashion is because it's in style and trendy, with most sustainable clothing lacking this crucial aspect. This is something we didn't take into account, and there could be more research done looking into ways to create trendy fashion sustainably.
Hemp wasn’t legal until 2018 due to the farm bill; there is still so much research that needs to be done around hemp to determine if it will be a viable sustainable alternative material.
Companies such as SHEIN also don’t provide the public with data on their manufacturing components, and it’s difficult to tell how eco friendly a company is. It it’s easy for companies like SHEIN to lie about how eco friendly they are, which could bring about problems when developing our tax
Lastly, we are still unsure where the most effective place for growing hemp in the United States would be, whether that would be all over the US or in specific areas or regions.
