Sustainable Apparel Coalition

Goal: This coalition aims to promote sustainability in the apparel, footwear, and textile industry by pairing up with companies to significantly lower their footprint. 

Methods for sustainability: The coalition developed an index known as the “Higg Index” that is composed of a set of tools that measure environmental and social labor impacts. After the assessment, the company can identify and alter its processes to improve its sustainability performance. 

Why actor is Important: This actor is extremely important because it opens the door to connecting with large textile corporations. They have been pairing up with companies and helping them become more sustainable. With our proposed tax, companies will need the extra support in turning to more sustainable options that will help them to continue to thrive in the future.

Jim Riley

Lobbyist for National Waste and Recycling Association (NWRA)

  • The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) represents the private sector waste and recycling services industry in the US. Association members conduct business in all 50 states and include companies that manage waste, recycling and medical waste, equipment manufacturers and distributors, and a variety of other service providers. Focuses on Textile waste in the United States.

  • Riley has focused on making textile waste more regulated in the US. He lobbies for the NWRA, which focuses on recycling waste in the US, which we could apply when looking at ways to help with Textile Waste in the US caused by fast fashion. He is an important actor because he can help to lobby for our proposed tax.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Who is she?: AOC is a congresswoman known for advocating for sustainable policies and projects, such as the Green New Deal. With the green new deal, various aspects of industry and our daily lives will be altered to becomes more sustainable, including waste in the fashion industry. It stresses that there must be a shift from our current process that produces significant amounts of waste, to waste-free methods of production, consumption, and more. 

Importance: AOC is an extremely important actor because she has the power to lobby other congress members into passing taxes that aim to create a more sustainable world. She would aid us in passing our proposed tax.

Greta Thunberg

  • Greta Thunberg is a 18 year old Swedish environmentalist that is known for challenging politicians when it comes to global warming related issues.

  • Advocate of "shop stop" where you never buy any clothing you don't absolutely need.

United Nations Alliance for Sustainable Fashion

The UN Alliance for Sustainable fashion is an initiative of United Nations agencies and allied organizations working together to contribute to sustainable development goals. They are working to combat waste, carbon emissions, and other social challenges. 
They will identify "gaps" in the actions of UN agencies and this analysis will be used for important schemes, such as lobbying national governments to can age their policies. 
Importance: Because of their ability to bring together important organizations and lobby national governments, they would significantly help with lobbying congress to pass our proposed tax.
